Munich, where I spent four weeks in August, is known to many as the gateway to Europe. But like all cities in Europe or elsewhere, it can be prohibitively expensive. If you’re planning to stop in Munich and wish to partake in much of what it has to offer the tourist, I recommend that you contact Mike Krauser #2559. Mike, who I have mentioned in connection with the Olang Rally, operates the BMW sales in Germering, a suburb of Munich located south-west of the city. Mike and his charming wife Lotti have lived a good part of their lives in and around Munich and would be happy to give you tips on where to go and what to see there.
Germering is also ideally situated. It has good and moderately priced hotels close to Mike as well as a streetcar (Strassenbahn) that will take you right into the heart of Munich.
If you like, Mike will make hotel reservations for you in advance of your visit. Address your letter to: Mike Krauser, 8034 Munich-Germering, Obere Bahnhofstr. 36-c, Postfach 39, W-Germany, or you can call him at (0811)-842352 or 845811.
Due to poor weather and possibly the later date chosen, the first annual BMWMOA Schmittburg Treffen was not as successful as it might have been. Only 14 people showed up, and most left the following day on Sunday. The campsite was ideally situated on the side of a hill overlooking a fresh valley with the Schmittburg castle in view on a nearby hill. As one, however, planning for our annual BMWMOA Schmittburg Treffen. Next year, I think we might choose a better date, one that will not conflict with a holiday, and order lots of sunshine in advance. The idea of the Treffen was a good one, and in spite of the rain, we did have a good time. Many thanks to Tim Shaffer #423 who did a fine job of organizing the rally.
The latest update of the European Listing was distributed in August. In addition, a list of all European members with their addresses was distributed in August. The latter list is intended for your use in contacting those members located in or near areas you may be interested in visiting. It is available from Frank Diederich or myself.
Two months ago I mentioned that Rosalie and I would visit Greece for our vacation in September. Due to the political strife there we changed our plans and went to Spain and Portugal instead. In fact, this article was written in Lagos, Portugal after travelling over 3,000 kilometers from our home in Germany.
