1975 March

BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, European Corner, March 1975

Written by Pat Thomas #1791

With spring around the corner, our thoughts naturally turn to getting our faithful BMW’s, be it solo or hack, out of mothballs and stretching their hibernating horsepowers. Next, we turn to the question of where, how far, and what kind of riding are we planning to do this year. For some of you, it doesn’t make any difference where you go, just as long as you can temporarily get away from the everyday hum-drum of life – just you and your BMW humming along old or new roads just for the sheer pleasure of it.

Others dream and plan for the Third BMW National to be held on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of June in Missouri and of the nice people they’ll meet there from all over the country.

Still others will plan to visit Europe for their initial or return trip to visit old romantic castles, drink famous wines, gaze at scenery first-hand that they have seen in brochures, and discover some of the best motorcycle roads that exist today.

And how to get there? – Some might take advantage of Bob Beach’s Alpine Tours, which, for a set price will make them the owner of a new BMW motorcycle and allow them to spend approximately three weeks touring southern Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and Yugoslavia. Last year, nine members visited Europe in this manner. This year, Bob’s spring tour is from 25 May to 16 June, and his fall tour from 7 to 29 September. A few may plan to come to Europe on their own like George and Jo Anne Holliday did last year. This year, Dave Reinauer and his wife may return to Europe for their second time. Roger Lovin, the author of “The Complete Motorcycle Nomad”, is also planning to visit Europe in early spring. And I’m sure there are more of you.

So, if you are planning to visit Europe sometime this year, or if you would just like to rap, drop me a line. If I cannot answer your inquiry, I’ll forward it to someone who can. My address is: P.A. Thomas, Hq 1st Spt Bde ACS-NGR, APO NY 09325.

Ed Kane #2496 from Mannheim, although an avid BMW’er, accidentally came across a “treasure chest” of old Zündapp motorcycle parts, most in mint condition. Some may fit the older BMW models, but Ed won’t know until he has finished his inventory. However, if you’re looking for a particular item, send a self-addressed envelope to Ed Kane, Heidelberg Community Club System, APO NY 09102. He’ll research your request and give you a prompt reply.
